Dr. Mike Evans: ‘What’s the Single Best Thing We Can Do for Our Health?’

We’ve featured his work before. And it’s so good we wanted to follow up with another of Dr. Mike Evans’s creations.

This one is called 23 and ½ Hours and is the first in his series of “Whiteboard Med School” presentations. To date, it’s been translated into eight languages and seen around the world more than 7.5 million times.

Last year, the Globe and Mail ran a feature on Evans and his new approach to public service announcements in health care. According to the article, the idea for 23 and ½ Hours was inspired by a need to break down the information silos that exist in medicine.

“People say I need a cancer screen, I have to eat fibre, I have to lower my cholesterol,” Evans said, explaining his holistic approach. “So I asked: What is one thing you can do? I sat in a room for two weeks and did the research.”

He discovered that there is in fact one treatment that can help many, seemingly unrelated health problems. Here what’s possible with this one “miracle cure”:

  • Reducing pain by 47% in people suffering from knee arthritis.
  • Reducing the progression to dementia and Alzheimer’s by 50% in older patients.
  • Reducing the progression to diabetes by 58% in high risk patients (when coupled with other positive lifestyle changes).
  • Reducing anxiety by 48%.
  • Relieving symptoms of depression by 30%.

So what’s the treatment?

Walking. Just 30 minutes a day.

The end of Evans’s presentation leaves viewers with an important call to action: “Can you limit your sitting and sleeping to just 23 and ½ hours a day?”

Watch the video. It could change your life in just 30 minutes a day.
