Since establishing the award in 2012, our firm has proudly sponsored the annual Slater Vecchio LLP Trial Advocacy Entrance Award. Recognizing academic excellence, leadership, and community service, the full-tuition award is presented each year to one deserving student on the recommendation of the UBC Faculty of Law.
We’re delighted to announce that Patricia Neijens was selected in the fall of 2017 for the award for the 2017-2018 academic year.
Patricia Neijens grew up in Vancouver and graduated from Montreal’s McGill University in 2016 with a B.A. (Hons) in International Development and minors in Hispanic studies and Islamic and Middle East studies. During her undergraduate degree, Patricia was involved in the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU) and the Arts Undergraduate Society (AUS) as a student representative in multiple committees.
Patricia volunteered with “McGill Investigating Canadian Mining in Latin America”, an undergraduate research and advocacy collective. Through the collective, she organized several public events with lawyers, Members of Parliament, and Central American indigenous mining activists to discuss the responsibility of Canadian extractive industries abroad. She was also the vice-president for the UN Women McGill Chapter and spent a year and a half volunteering as an elementary school mentor on a weekly basis.
Returning to Vancouver for her legal studies, Patricia is enrolled at the Allard School of Law at UBC and is already demonstrating her continued passion for community involvement. She’s currently active in the UBC Law Women’s Caucus and the Legal Education and Outreach Club and is an associate editor for the UBC Law Review. In her free time, you can find her practicing on the field with the Allard Women’s Rugby Team, rain or shine!
We’re delighted to play a role in Patricia’s ongoing legal education and congratulate her on this award. With her commitment to excellence, community, and a winning attitude, we’re certain she’ll do well in her law studies at UBC.
