A 21-year-old Australian woman was texting and driving when she slammed into a cyclist, breaking his back.
But Kimberley Davis hasn’t learned her lesson.
“I just don’t care because I’ve already been through a lot of bulls__t and my car is, like, pretty expensive and now I have to fix it,” Davis said to police after the accident. “I’m kind of pissed off that the cyclist has hit the side of my car. I don’t agree that people texting and driving could hit a cyclist. I wasn’t on my phone when I hit the cyclist.”
Police reports say Davis used her phone 44 times in 25 minutes before hitting the cyclist. She sent and received 22 text messages from seven different numbers.
The lights on the cyclist’s bike were of no use because Davis wasn’t even looking at the road.
Davis called emergency services after the crash but didn’t bother getting out of her car to help.
The cyclist suffered a spinal fracture, a broken toe, and multiple skin lacerations to the head and body. He underwent surgery at a Melbourne hospital and spent three months in recovery. Doctors said he was lucky to avoid permanent paralysis.
Davis was charged with 47 dangerous driving offences for each time she used her phone. She pleaded guilty to all charges, losing her licence for nine months and racking up $4500 in fines. Last week, a judge suspended her license for an additional nine months.
The cyclist’s wife was “deeply disappointed” that Davis’ licence wasn’t suspended for longer.
